Burn Up now has it's own webpage!!!

www.burnup.110mb.com

The rules found below are an earlier version of the game. They do, however, contain some material not yet present in the final version.

Burn Up

Universal, Dice Less, Role Play Game System

Adventure is calling your name and it is the purpose of these pages to help you and your friends find it. More over, the following pages contain rules and resources to help you create and “live” out whatever sort of adventure you want. Your imaginations and communication skills should always be the main tools when you are doing this, but Burn Up can help bring some regularity to your game as well as resolve disputes in your group about what happens.

Also, feel free to suggest changes or to correct my spelling and grammar. If you change something on a wiki, leave a comment so I know what's going on.

2004-07-25 [Vesthrix]: Can I get some input on this page?

2004-07-31 [zeldazebra]: This looks like a grand and large project. Good luck

2004-08-08 [Vesthrix]: With Burn Up Basics what was it that you changed?

2004-09-17 [Jay Ladlehaus]: So how goes the war?

2004-09-17 [Vesthrix]: What war?

2004-10-16 [Vesthrix]: If anyone wants to change something leave a comment so I can tell what you changed.

2004-10-27 [Amtharnis]: Very clever roleplaying system you are developing here. I like how you have solved the dice issue. Good concept and easy to understand.

2004-10-27 [ArchangelGabriel]: How did you solve the dice issue?

2004-10-28 [Vesthrix]: All checks are made with scores which are already at the minimum "roll." Then you just pump them up with energy. see Burn Up Basics for more detail.

2004-10-29 [ArchangelGabriel]: you do klnow that thers a dice on every page? its the D20, its completly inpreditcable and you can go back and see what it used to say

2004-10-29 [Amtharnis]: Yes, Lobsang, but have you looked at the Burn Up Basic yet. I think it is possibly a better way of playing on the net. As they say, there is more than one way to skin a dire rat. This is good lateral thinking, and for once it is not something that is just slightly modified from Gary Gygax's system... like most other alternative game systems are.

2004-10-29 [Vesthrix]: No I didn't know that elftown could roll a D20. Never seen anyone use it ether. Oh well, diceless systems have some charm

2004-10-29 [ArchangelGabriel]: sorry, large chunks of text make me nervous

2004-10-29 [Vesthrix]: That large block of text could use some orgainiation though.

2004-11-01 [Vesthrix]: I just made some major changes to the way knacks work. Now they keep get better each level you've had them. Tell me what you think. Also items will be done soon.

2004-11-19 [Wolfga]: Hey, just checking out this system, however, I changed something up at the top there. It now reads: "If anyone is interested in using it in a different setting than I have foreseen then I am more than willing to help make the necessary material." I think that makes it sound a little bit better...

2004-11-19 [Vesthrix]: Thanks. Maybe it would sound better still if I cut out the "than I have foreseen" bit all together.

2004-11-27 [Vesthrix]: At long last Items are up. How long have I been working on them? Seems like months. Anyway, there not really finished of course, just done enough for now. I would like to break down modern gear into world war age and information age groups. The thing is that the present time is inbetween the ages. The question is what should I start on next? (after college aplications that is.) <poll:37929>

2004-12-16 [Duhe Rahn]: I'll help but you'll have to email me or use the elftown messages.

2005-01-03 [Vesthrix]: Had some time in computer class today so I started reworking Burn Up Basics. Thats something I've been meaning to do for ever and a day.

2005-01-06 [Vesthrix]: Ok, I finished reworking Burn Up Basics. Now it has sub titles and looks pretty. My mother proofread it so it should make seen grammatically. She is not RPG oriented but she said it make sense to her which is the best comments I had gotten yet. Of course I'll be reworking alot of the older stuff soon to. So go read it and tell me what you guys think.

I demand comments!

2005-01-29 [Vesthrix]: Just added the magic system. Set a few non elftown friends to looking at it. I think I'm going to make it so you can pump spell ranges for more spells. I'll change that some time enless some one else wants to do it...

2005-01-29 [Vesthrix]: Creatures are up next by request in <poll:37929>

2005-02-26 [Vesthrix]: Ok, I've had some time on my hands on the last couple days thanks to the snow. I made so ajustments to spell, add a the first of the higher divisions of magic: BU Decay Magic and add the first group of creatures, the rats, to the creatures chapter. Busy couple of days. I hoping to run a game in this in a club at school so wish me luck.

2005-03-05 [Vesthrix]: Ok, just had my wisdom teeth out and in the resulting void of any real work I got some work here. I changed the way ability scores are used to calculate other scores. Now you have a major and a minor score for each ability. Skills (and avoid) are now calculated from a major and minor or 3 minor scores. This makes character and creature generation easier. It also adds more flexiblity to the system. On the bad side it adds another number to the system. So what do you guys think?

2005-03-07 [Vesthrix]: Just added BU Anti Magic Magic, BU Counter Magic and BU Null Magic. Somebody mind taking a look at them for me. I was kind of drugged out when I did them. Hopefull I'll be making so new creatures soon but no promissies.

2005-03-12 [Vesthrix]: New creatures: BU Creatures Beasts

2005-03-13 [Vesthrix]: And some more. I'm running a game in Burn Up in an after school club in 2 weeks so I should be making quite a bit of material in the near future.

2005-03-28 [Firefox1121]: hey lew

2005-03-29 [*SilverCat*]: i feel i can not read it all...actualy i just can't be bothered but keep up the good work the first few sentences were great! ^.^

2005-04-05 [Vesthrix]: What do you guys think of changing the way damage works from amount attack exceeded avoid + weapon's damage value to x weapon's damage value? Damage values would of course be agusted. The advantage is a larger range of damage. The disadvantage is it takes longer to multiply then it does to add.

2005-04-10 [Vesthrix]: So is their anyone here who accually understands that last comment or should I stop making new stuff and see what I can do to simplify the old stuff?

2005-05-02 [Duredhel]: Hmm, not bad, but too complicated for ET, other than a few hardcore RPers you won't have many players with the stamina or disposition to keep up with the rules

2005-05-02 [Vesthrix]: Yay, I kinda realized that, but ET is still a good place to develop it and I might be able to compacted it some more. Thanks for commenting.

2005-05-02 [Duredhel]: no prob

2005-07-08 [Vesthrix]: An idea for a new way of doing armor: New Burn Up Armor. Please take a look and tell me what you think. There are some bran new armors in there too.

2005-08-13 [cookie_monster]: I love DND, but your rules and stuff are like... complicated... dice rolls and statistics make me depressed.

2005-08-14 [Vesthrix]: Please tell me more and I'll try to simplify.

2006-01-11 [Penguinlord]: Well, the 5 minute basics is all very well and good, but try and condense it even more and make a 30 second guide to build up to the 5 min, then the full guide. And try and use more examples...

2006-01-11 [Vesthrix]: 30 secound guide!?! I'll look into it, but I don't know. As for examples, maybe I could add an example of play section...

2006-01-11 [Penguinlord]: What you really need are step by step guides to learning to play, how to create a character, how to fight a combat etc.

2006-01-11 [Vesthrix]: I think you might have a point there.

2006-02-24 [Vesthrix]: Since X-mass I added a bunch of creatures. However, I'm not quite satisfied with the formatting yet, so they're still under coming soon. I've also been reworking the spells. Hopefully that will make it so that there is some point in being a mage. Finally, I'm also giving some thought into reworking knacks to make being a warrior more interesting.

2006-06-03 [Vesthrix]: I redid the way you get more skills when you advance. Now a character with high intellegece won't eventaully become a lot more powerful then everyone else, regardless of other scores!

2006-08-03 [Vesthrix]: Big update to knacks of the last few weeks. Not conting the mage knacks there are now 30. Also pumping is history which makes the game just that much easier, faster and funner to play. Really that should have gone years ago.

2006-12-09 [Vesthrix]: Ok, I'm working on finals and after that: Winter Break! A full month to do (for the most part) whatever I desire. I desire to run a game with Burn Up (number three, I think) next semester so I think I'll be spending a good deal of time working on this, particularly the magic system. I'm going to bring it back to my orginal insperation, Magic the Gathering. I'll be getting ride of the secoundary devisions so there will only be the five main colors. I'm also rebalancing the spell available, adding new spells and adding will and fortitude scores to the game. Finally, I'm toying with the ideas of trying to set up conbinations of spells that work together for more powerful effects and possibly creating "Boster Packs" that will contain spells with a uniffing feature. Boster Packs could be used to give a region or a given magical cult special powers.

2006-12-26 [Vesthrix]: When I started making this system I was trying to keep my terminalogy seperate for D&D's. This was both a point of pride and because my school had a rule agaist playing D&D even in after school club but not other role play games. In the end I have to admit that using D&D system of terminalogy is probably for the best. Most gamers, including myself, think in it.

In other news, I did a lot of work on spells. The spell divisons are now balanced to each other. I've also added a bunch of new spells and I have a list of more ideas to add. Whether the magic system is balanced to the rest of the game is a problem for another day, but if it isn't, it should be an easy fix. I still need to rewrite a bunch of stuff around here.

2007-01-09 [Vesthrix]: Update to Burn Up Magic complete. Still no magic items but those can wait for another break.
